Public Wi-Fi may be convenient, and I have to admit when I am abroad without my 4G or a local SIM card, then I seek out public Wi-Fi as much as I do places to eat where the food is something my stomach can handle. Oddly enough being abroad disconnects me from the outside world in some ways because I am constantly dipping into my pocket looking at my phone for new messages only to realize that I am not connected to 4G.
The natural thing for everyone to do is to go and look for a public Wi-Fi router. However, what happens when that router is in a tourist area where people often make travel bookings. This is the ideal place for someone looking to defraud your credit card or capture your card details. With so many tourists willingly entering their card details and other personal information while connected to these routers, the public router is prime hunting grounds.
Even when you do get a tourist SIM card who is to say that there is not someone in that company that is capturing the data from the number or SIM you were provided. Places in South East Asia have been well-known for this kind of fraud in the past and you never know whether they have really stamped it out for good.
That is why whenever I go abroad, I always use my VPN software. I have it installed on both my telephone and my laptop. I cannot log on to both at the same time, but I can have the same software on both devices and log on to one or the other. That said, there are other packages out there that will allow you to log on from multiple devices from the same account – it is just down to what you choose.
The idea of this software is much like bästa VPN tjänsten - to create a connection within the internet connection you are using. This is actually a VPN tunnel. It means that rather than using the router’s settings to help you navigate the internet, you are using the public router to start a tunnel that is totally encrypted. Then from here all your data travels through that tunnel. Anyone that has access to the internet router will not be able to see the sites you are visiting or hijack your connection.
Without it, someone connected to the router could use intelligent IT software to see exactly what you are doing. Some can even use open ports on your computer you don’t know about to actually see your screen and look at exactly what you are doing.
They can even record this and also record your keystrokes. Now I am not saying this happens all the time on every router you use out there in public because that would not be true. Though, there are plenty of routers out there on which this is happening. You never know which one and there are literally thousands of people that report internet fraud every day, and most of this is because there is a large number of public internet routers being used for fraud so use something like bästa VPN to protect yourself.
Even your hotel router may not be safe. Inside jobs from the IT teams are not unheard of. They can also capture your data and steal your card details as well as other personal information.
