From pericarp to mice, they are animals that are eager to move in with you, but they are not always desired at home. Not only do they leave a lot of mess, but they also make unpleasant noises and it is not always hygienic. In short: get rid of vermin! We give you the tips to recognize and fight pests.
First of all: What is vermin?
Pests are animal species or insects that have crawled into your home, business or institution to live here. Here they find both food and shelter. Pests are difficult to get rid of once they are in your home. Beyond that, pests do everything they can to survive and multiply quickly. So do not wait too long and fight pests as soon as possible.
Pollution. For example, pests gnaw through everything and leave a lot of mess. Think of: feces, litters and sometimes even diseases. Also, your food supplies often do not remain untouched and these “critters” make unpleasant noises.
Types of pests
The house mouse is a shy animal that is looking for food and warmth. They can be recognized by their feces (black, pointed granules) and nasty gnawing noises.
Rats are proportionately larger and longer than the house mouse. They come to your home for food, heat and a safe shelter. You can recognize the presence by their feces (brown, banana-shaped) and by scratching sounds. They also bring unpleasant diseases, such as: rat bite fever and Weil’s disease.
Wasps are almost always looking for (sweet) food. That is why they settle in your home together with a safe shelter. You will often find a wasp nest in the attic or in the garage / shed. You can recognize a nest by several (dead) wasps in or around your home.
Silverfish are small elongated silvery gray insects. They like to live in a humid environment, such as: the bathroom, toilets and kitchen cabinets and affect not only your food supply, but also books, photo albums and paintings. They like to hitch a ride in moving boxes, furniture, old books and paper. There is a plague when you encounter 10 to 50 a week.
Fleas like warm and damp places like mattresses, but also cat and dog baskets. Fleas feed on blood, so especially in your home for you or your pet. Fleas can be recognized by enormous itching and red bumps. When you see your pet (s) itch every time, this can also indicate fleas.
Ants are mainly in areas where food is eaten or leftovers, such as the living room and kitchen. Beyond that, you will find ants in warm, damp places such as bathrooms and crawl spaces. You can recognize them by subsidence of terraces or driveways and even eaten away insulation material.
Bed bugs are mainly in your bedroom. The small, white eggs are in the seams of mattresses. The larvae are transparent and when they suck blood red in color. A bedbug bites people after which itching and redness develop. You recognize them by discoloration of your mattress and even small blood spots.
These larvae of the woodworm beetles feed on wood, causing damage. You recognize the presence of this type of pest through holes and tunnels in your woodwork, because they have eaten away. They are often found in wooden furniture, works of art and floors, but also doors, stairs and support beams.
Prevention is better than cure
Pests mainly target food. It is therefore wise to store this properly in closed containers. It is also advisable to close the gaps and seams of your home and continue to check this. A door or window screen can help keep flying insects out.
When you notice the presence of pests, there are several things you can do, such as: removing food source or nesting place, removing by hand (small insects), mechanical trap or calling in a professional fighter. Finally, there are also different plant species that repel insects and the presence of a pet can also help to fight vermin.
