Exercising with a child or getting them to exercise can be difficult. However, no one had to say it was exercise. There are many ways that we can get our children up and moving without them even knowing they are exercising. Plus, there are ways to get them engaged and learning while doing so!
1. Find a Sport
There are so many different sports available for children. Sometimes, children do not even have to be three years of age to participate in them. Find something that your child loves and that they can do once or twice a week.
Make sure that the sport that you are putting the child in is appropriate for them. The sport should not challenge them too hard. For example, you don’t want your eight-year-old to be weight lifting or running a marathon. However, something like swimming and soccer is great for younger children.
2. Invest in Active Toys
One of the easiest ways to get your children moving is with interactive toys. These toys could be jump ropes, rollerblades, and even a soccer ball. These are all items children enjoy playing with and it gets them moving pretty quickly. Make sure the items that you are picking are safe for your child’s age. You want to make sure that you are always watching them when they are playing with something more advanced.
3. Be an Active Part
When children see you enjoying activities, they are more likely to join in. When the parents are active and being a role model, it helps show the children that it is something fun and we can be like mommy! Children love seeing parents engage.
4. Play with the Child
When you are an active part of a child’s life and you are a role model, you should engage with them. This means kicking the soccer ball around or teaching them new skills. However, when you are playing with your child, make sure that you are not being overly competitive or aggressive. Your child should also be learning manners and sharing skills.
5. Set Aside Time for Exercise
Between homework, lessons, and other activities many children simply don’t think they have the time for exercise. However, you should always set aside at least thirty minutes for exercise. This will ensure that your children are getting out and being active. This is also the best time to be a role model and join them! Go outside and kick the ball around. Take the children to the pool or a gym.
