While it would be fantastic if we could all enjoy the same levels of peak health and wellbeing, the simple fact is that this is unfortunately sometimes you can do everything right and still end up suffering from a health issue. Health and wellbeing are the two most important gifts that any one individual can be given in their lifetime, however they are also two of the most fragile gifts that any one individual is ever going to be given. While it is true that more and more individuals are prioritising their health and wellbeing properly these days, the simple reality is that there are still those who do not for whatever reason. And perhaps even more unsettling is that even for those individuals who do prioritise their health and wellbeing, there is no guarantee that they are going to go through life in their peak level of health and wellbeing. Some health issues are easily managed, some are a consistent challenge, and then there are those health issues that are entirely case by case.
One such health issue is diabetes. Diabetes is a health issue that so many individuals around the globe live with. A disease of abnormal blood sugar levels, diabetes is a progressive disease that, if left unchecked, can have devastating impacts on the human body. Essentially, when diabetes is mismanaged (or worse, ignored entirely), it can damage the heart, the eyes, the kidneys, and the nerves. What this means is that individuals who are unwilling or unaware of how to treat their condition can be more at risk for heart attacks, strokes, blindness, kidney failure, and neuropathy. The biggest difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes is that Type 1 is irreversible and Type 2 can be prevented and even reversed through active and consistent attention to detail surrounding one’s diet and their weight distribution. Whether it is Type 1 or Type 2, it is always of the utmost importance that anyone struggling with diabetes is willing and able to do the work to adequately manage their condition.
There are of course multiple ways that diabetics can manage their condition. All of these approaches are incredibly important, of course, however there are some approaches that are underestimated and undervalued, often (if not always) to the detriment of the individual themselves. As frustrating as it might be sometimes, for diabetics it is important to take care of their feet. Diabetic individuals are at higher risk of foot infections and injuries because high blood sugar levels can potentially cause damage to their circulatory and nervous systems. Damage to the nerves can limit the sensation in the body (in this case, in the feet specifically) which can be a risk factor for significant damage to the feet (especially the bottoms of the feet). Having circulatory problems makes it more of a challenge for these wounds to heal. So, this is where diabetic socks come into play and make such a massive difference in the lives of diabetics around the globe.
